2019 Camões Prize

In May, the 2019 Camões Prize was awarded to the Brazilian artist, musician and writer, Chico Buarque. In addition to his many musical compositions that are part of the legacy of popular Brazilian music, Chico Buarque’s work includes prize-winning novels, such as Estorvo and Budapest.

This prize, which was awarded for the first time in 1989 to Miguel Torga, was established by the Portuguese and Brazilian governments to recognise an author “whose work has contributed to the projection and recognition of the literary and cultural heritage of our common language”. In the past, this honour has been given to writers including Pepetela, Jorge Amado, José Saramago and Agustina Bessa-Luís, who recently passed away.
