A universal language?

A University of California study seems to show, for the first time, that so-called baby talk is universal.

The experiment was conducted in a remote community in Ecuador, where the subjects had to place phrases into four categories: prohibitions, calls for attention, praise or consolation. All the phrases were offered in English, a language they did not speak, but spoken as if to children. The members of the community got 75% of the phrases correct.

According to the authors, the study shows that the relationship between sounds and intentions is universal.
