CPLP International Portuguese Language and Culture Day

The countries in the CPLP (Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries) commemorate the CPLP International Portuguese Language and Culture Day on 5 May. This is the day for highlighting the cultural and historical importance of a language that is among the six most spoken in the world and used by more than 278 million people.

The CPLP was founded by Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and São Tomé e Príncipe in 1996. Timor jointed in 2002, followed by Equatorial Guinea in 2014.
