The Speed Limit of Languages

It is common sense that different languages have different paces. Japanese and Spanish for instance are known to be fast-paced. German and Chinese on the other hand are comparatively slow.

A recent study published in the journal Science Advances concluded that the speed of a language does not necessarily provide evidence on the amount of information conveyed. According to the responsible researchers, information is consistently transmitted at an average speed of 39 bits per second.

The same study has found that the 17 languages considered, belonging to different language families, all show different levels of efficiency when it comes to the amount of information per syllable. It also found that slower languages tend to be more efficient.

These findings may also be interesting (although perhaps not very surprising) for our very own linguists. Traductanet collaborates daily with native speakers from all over the world to ensure linguistic services of the highest quality.
