JUVENES TRANSLATORES COMPETITION 2019

The European Commission has launched the 13th edition of its annual Juvenes Translatores competition, which is open to all 17-year-old secondary school pupils in Europe.

This year the theme of the translation will be the contribution of young people towards shaping Europe’s future. Participants may choose between any two of the EU’s 24 official languages (552 possible combinations).

The deadline for school entries – which is the first of two stages – is noon (Central European time) on 20 October 2019. The chosen schools will be invited to put forward two to five pupils. The pupils can be of any nationality, but they must all have been born in the same year: 2002.

Initiatives like this are an important way to encourage young people to enter the translation profession. The main job opportunities are with translation agencies, where young professionals may pursue a career focusing on any of a number of areas, including:

translation – including technical translation (e.g. medical)

interpretation – consecutive or simultaneous interpretation

– software and website localisation

terminology management – including the creation of specific and technical terminology databases
