TRANSLATION CENTRE LAUNCHES IATE 2

On 5 December 2018, the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union officially introduced IATE 2 (InterActive Terminology for Europe) at an event in the European Convention Centre, Luxembourg. This huge interinstitutional database has been managed by the Translation Centre on behalf of the European institutions since 2003.

With more than 8.5 million terms in the 24 official languages of the European Union, IATE has become THE terminology reference not only for language professionals, but also for national experts, policy advisers, public administrations, academics and private sector companies operating across a wide range of specialist areas. IATE is clearly a very popular tool, with 32.8 million queries to public version and 18.7 million queries to the EU interinstitutional version in 2017.

At the launch of IATE’s public version in 2007, the then Commissioner for Multilingualism, Mr Leonard Orban, said “ IATE is a shining example of the synergy that can be created between different bodies, each unique but all with a common purpose: to bring the European message to citizens in the clearest possible form, in a language that they can understand”.

It is with great pleasure that Traductanet, a company providing specialist translation, multilingual SEO, software and website localisation and transcreation has followed the development of IATE, a terminology tool that our teams of translators, revisors, terminologists and specialists use every day. IATE is one of the reliable sources recommended to our teams, ensuring consistency and rigour in their work.
